Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before starting psychotherapy

As a rule, therapy sessions last 60 minutes. Occasionally, a different duration may be agreed upon depending on the specific needs of the moment.

The frequency of sessions varies depending on the needs of the individual, such as the intensity of distress and other factors. Initially, it is preferable to attend at least biweekly, but this can be adjusted as progress is made in therapy and the ideal frequency can be better determined.

The duration of treatment varies widely depending on the nature and severity of the issues being addressed. Some people may see improvements within weeks, while others may need several months or more. The goal is often to acquire knowledge and tools that enable the individual to manage their difficulties and distress independently, continuing the process of change on their own after therapy ends.

Psychotherapy can address a wide range of issues, including anxiety, depression, stress, relationship problems, behavioral disorders, trauma, and many more. Any emotional or psychological concern can be discussed in therapy. If, after evaluating your case, I determine that this is not the right space for you, I will try to help guide you to the right path, whether by recommending another mental health professional or other possible referrals.

My method of work is based on scientific evidence, framed in the cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy model, and comes from a contextual perspective. The contextual model aims to explain human behavior by the function it serves in the specific context of the individual; that is, it studies the dynamic interaction between the person and their environment, rather than examining behaviors in isolation.

Medication is not required. It is only one possible resource whose convenience may be considered in specific cases where the needs justify it. In any case, the choice will always be up to the individual, depending on their personal preference. The pros and cons can be discussed in sessions. If you decide to consider medication, I will provide you with the contact information of a psychiatric professional who can inform and support you throughout the process.

Yes, all therapy sessions are confidential. Only in exceptional cases, when I consider there is an imminent risk of harm to oneself or others, could it be necessary to break this confidentiality to ensure the safety of the client or others.

The same applies if you’re a teenager and are concerned that I might share with your parents or guardians what you tell me in the session. What you share will remain between you and me.

You do not need a medical referral to start therapy. You can contact me directly to schedule an initial appointment. If your doctor or another therapist has recommended that you seek psychological help, I will be happy to contact the professional to facilitate the process.

The best way to determine if psychotherapy is right for you is to schedule an initial consultation to discuss your concerns and goals. Together, we will evaluate whether this approach can benefit you. You can also share any doubts through any of the available contact channels.

Choosing the right therapist involves considering the professional’s experience, training, and approach, as well as the comfort and trust you feel during the first sessions. The therapeutic relationship is key to the success of the treatment. Often, we don’t find the right person on the first try. I know it can be difficult to try again with someone else, but it can be well worth it if you find the person you need.

In the first session, the therapist will ask you about your current concerns, personal background, and therapeutic goals. This helps to create a personalized treatment plan and establish a foundation of trust and collaboration.

Online therapy takes place through secure and confidential video calls. It provides the same quality of care as in-person therapy and is ideal for those with geographic or time constraints.

It is important to feel comfortable with your therapist. If after a few sessions you don’t feel a good connection, it is advisable to discuss your concerns with the therapist. Sometimes, changing therapists can be the best option for your well-being. In that case, I will be happy to help you find another person and make the transition from one space to another as smooth as possible.

Some health insurance plans cover mental health services. I do not work directly with insurance providers, but if you have health insurance, I recommend you check with your provider if they offer reimbursement for sessions using the invoices I will provide during our sessions.

It is important to explain to your child in simple terms the purpose of therapy and why it may be helpful. Make sure they understand that the therapist is there to help and that it is a safe space to express their feelings. You can invite them to share any doubts during the first session and assess for themselves, without any commitment.

If you are unable to attend a scheduled session, please let me know at least 24 hours in advance so we can reschedule the visit. Cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance will need to be paid.

If you’re specifically looking for group therapy, please contact me beforehand to inquire about the available options. Due to the nature of group therapy, it requires different organization, and depending on the moment, this option may or may not be available.

You can contact me through the contact form on my website, calling my phone number, sending me a WhatsApp to the same number, or emailing me. I will be happy to answer your questions and schedule an initial appointment.
